This is the first time that the payload will function (most of it) all at the same voltage (+5V). On previous flight, we had an unlucky combination of old Vaisala sensors (-21V), a mechanical camera (3V), CMOS controllers (5V) and the beacon itself (12V). Hardly a reliable setup!
Now, only the beacon will be connected directly from the battery, and 5V will be obtained through a switching power supply, garanteeing use of the batteries till the end. This also means we can simply add cells till the needed capacity.
